The first London Underground map was still very geographically based, indicating the directions of lines and locations of station, overlaid on geographic features and main roads:

In 1938 Harry Beck designed a more diagrammatic map. This was a breakthrough in cartography, because the locations of stations are not longer geographically accurate:

That design has been copied for many maps ever since. The Strange maps blog featured this beautiful map of the wines of France:
