Darius goes west
November 26th, 2009 Posted in Taking a standThe opening film for the European Summit for Global Transformation last weekend was Darius goes west.
It is the documentary about 15 year old Darius Weems and eleven of his friends traveling from Athens, Georgia to San Francisco, California with the intention to have Darius’ wheelchair pimped on MTV’s Pimp my ride.
Darius has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), the number one fatal genetic disease to affect children in the world. People with DMD often die around the age of 20.
While on the road (in 2005), the trip developed into a journey to raise awareness of DMD and wheelchair accessibility in the USA.
One great thing about the documentary is that Darius is not a guy to have pity for. He is a funny rascal: "I am the DMD hero".
